Jews and Mallus….

a very unlikely combination…history says otherwise. Cochin has the oldest group of Jews in India. There is a street in Cochin by the name Jew Street. Last week my brother in law and I went on a photo tour of this place. From a photography perspective, it was a treat for me – this place is just brimming with colors and texture. You get to see shops selling antiques, clothes, furnitures…all set up to cater to the tourists. Jew Street also has the ‘Paradesi Synagogue’ – a synagogue built in 1568. Sources say that the ticket-seller at this synagogue, Yaheh Hallegua, is the last female Paradesi Jew of child-bearing age.

Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi – has got a rich history dating all the way back to the BC era. A classic postcard representation of Fort Kochi is the Chinese finishing nets. These nets were installed by the Chinese in the 14 century (they are still functional..:-p). Once (and even now to a certain extent) a hub for spices trade, this fishing town is now a popular tourist place for visitors to God’s Own Country. Now you can see lots of cafe’s and old bungalows converted into resorts…
