Athirapally waterfalls

A few weeks ago, we found time for a weekend getaway to visit the Athirapally Falls in Kerala. Located just a few hours away from Kochi, it was a quick and refreshing weekend spent in a beautiful hotel surrounded by the unspoiled green forest and the thundering waterfall .

We stayed at the Rainforest Resort – a boutique hotel set on a hilltop with 180 degree views of the powerful Athirapally Falls. I was skeptical about the ‘eco’ tag they proclaimed. But it didn’t take me long to realize that everything was very thoughtfully designed, and lets nature be as it is, as much as possible.

Every morning we woke up to the beautiful sight of the misty spray from the falls set against the verdant green forest; the silence of the early morning broken only by the roar of the water. It is the perfect place to just be and do nothing.

Big announcement

Hello dear readers, I have an announcement to make – I have relocated to India!!
This was the reason why the blog was pretty inactive off late – was busy winding down stuff in sunny LA. After a brief 6 years in Los Angeles, we decided to return home.
As a tribute, this post is about a place that has intrigued me a lot, a place I feel wasn’t able to fully explore – the Los Angeles Downtown.

The first set is pictures from Union Station and Olvera Street.
Union St

The second set is of the Toy district followed by my favorite – the Arts district. It was my first time to Toy District, which is also officially Skid Row. For folks who don’t know Skid Row, it’s the largest population of homeless in North America. There were stories of Skid Row that prevented me from exploring this place in 6 years. This time my curiosity got the better of me. With a dear friend for company, I set out for one last tour of LA downtown.

Strawberry summer cake

Photos of a strawberry cake my wife baked the other day. The cake is placed on slate – to add some texture and I used reflectors to bounce the light.

I think I have made it look as yummy as it tasted. Enjoy!!

Santa Monica Farmers Market

We spent most part of 4th of July in Santa Monica. We dragged ourselves out of our cozy beds for a suprisingly cold July morning in LA and headed to our first stop – the Santa Monica Farmers Market. The market is open thrice a week – on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The produce was fresh and beautiful. We had a great time sampling the summer bounty of sweet fruits and berries. I have never seen so many different varieties of strawberries before. We finished a basket of ‘Gaviota’ strawberries while walking through the market. They were the juiciest, sweetest strawberries I have ever tasted.
We walked around for a while and then headed to Huckleberry Cafe for lunch and coffee at Cafe Luxxe.

Abbot Kinney through the iPhone

Last Saturday we spent an afternoon in Venice. The first stop was at Gjelina for lunch. After seeing the wait time at 45 minutes, we put in our names and went exploring. We saw the Kogi truck – the very truck that started the whole food truck revolution. We had the Kogi Dog, short rib and the chicken tacos.

At Gjelina, we had beet-avocado salad, steak sandwich and mushroom pizza. Then we walked up and down Abbot Kinney, did some window shopping, ogled at some of the stuff in Jack Spade. We finished this episode of Abbot Kinney with coffee from Intelligentsia.

All pictures are taken on the iPhone and processed using Instagram and CrossProcess (not at the same time). I did not like the HDR option in the iPhone. Messes up the skin tones. I am on Instagram under mycaptureotime.

A weekend in San Francisco – Day 1

San Francisco is one of my all time favourite places. This was our third trip to this beautiful city. This time we decided to stay away from the regular tourist circuit. This meant no Fisherman’s wharf, no Pier 39 (this is the biggest tourist trap), no Golden Gate bridge, no Mystery Spot etc… This time we wanted to try the San Francisco food scene and neighbourhoods we hadn’t been to yet.

We started early on Saturday, with a visit to the Farmer’s Market at the Ferry Building. First we hit the food stalls like Roli Roti and 4505 Meats, before the lines got too long and they ran out of food. We had a porchetta sandwich and roasted potatoes from Roli Roti and, an amazing burger and lamb and fried egg sandwich from 4505 Meats. Then we got adventurous, and tried fresh oysters from Hog Island Oysters – first time ever! We finished up with gelato from Ciao Bella and a single origin espresso from Blue Bottle Coffee Co.

If I lived in San Francisco, I’d be here every Saturday. Such amazing food and stunning location!

Later in the day we went to Twin Peaks. This was my first time here and I have seen some amazing pictures of San Francisco taken from here. Towards the blue hour, all of a sudden this place was swamped with photogs and I had no clue as to why. Right from iphones to Leicas, they were all there. As the moon rose over the horizon, it became clear – it was the super moon! I was just lucky to have planned to be there at that time.

Umamicatessen

I first came to know about Umamicatessen through BBC’s travel section. It’s a new concept of restaurant/deli/bar all under one industrial open space. What I was excited about was the Bourbon pig – a cocktail with a garnish of fried pig ears!
Located in Downtown LA, its a great place for burger, pig, and cocktail lovers.
