36 Hours in London

A recent business trip to London gave me the opportunity to spend some time exploring the city.

From visiting indie book stores, drinking some of the finest coffee in London, amazing burgers, drinking lager at a pub thats been in operation since the 17th century, eating at the Borough market, taking the tube during rush hour –  I’d say it was a well spent 36 Hours in London. Here are the sights I captured.

London

My post will not be complete without mentioning CitizenM (no they are not paying me..). CitizenM was home for the 4 days I was in London. With good food, a bar thats open round the clock, free movies in the room, a quick self check in/check, a lobby that displays works of designers & artists, the place is less of a hotel and maybe more of design house.

Back to Abbot Kinney and Gjelina

Last weekend I rented the Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 Distagon T* Lens through Borrowlenses. Gave myself a challenge to use just this lens for the next 3 days…it was fun trying out a ‘non Canon’, heavy, manual lens with an aperture as wide as 1.4. Loved the lens for its f1.4. Not good to photograph kids jumping around..

Sunday we were back at Abbot Kinney. One of the reasons that keeps taking us back to Abbot Kinney is Gjelina.
The folks at Gjelina create some pretty good stuff in their kitchens..I wouldn’t mind going back till we try all the items on their menu. I am sure it will be worth it. Check out my previous posts on Abbot Kinney and Gjelina here and here.

Our find at Gjelina this time was Calimocho which is Red Wine, Coca-Cola & Citrus and Bloody Beer which is Tecate, Tomato Juice, Spices & Citrus. For dessert, one of the gelato flavors of the day was vanilla with olive oil. Sounds weird? Trust me it tastes good 🙂

Right next to Gjelina is GTA. GTA aka Gjelina Take Away is for people who wish to skip the Gjelina lines. Their menu has items from Gjelina’s ( not all..some of them). I stopped to get a coffee for the drive back to sunny and warm Woodland Hills.
Here are some photographs from GTA

Moab

Nice town..not very touristy with enough options for good food. My find in Moab was Milt’s Stop and Eat. If I was there for a week, I would have tried every thing on their menu. Milt’s has also been featured in the NY Times’ 36 hours in Moab feature. This place must not be missed.

Salt’s Cure

Salt’s Cure gets featured in all the ‘best breakfast/brunch’ lists in Los Angeles. We decided to check out this place on Saturday. It was really good and definitely deserves its spot on all those lists!

We had the ‘potted pig’. It’s pork cooked in its own fat served with crackers, herbs and pickled onions – not to be missed. We also had the 2 X 2 X 2 – that’s 2 eggs, 2 bacon strips & 2 sausages with biscuit and jam. The jam is fresh (it will be a crime to waste it). If you think you don’t need the jam, just try dipping the bacon in it.
And yes, the 2 X 2 X 2 tastes as beautiful as it looks 🙂

Pizzeria Mozza

Lunch on Sunday was at Pizzeria Mozza. This restaurant is owned by Nancy Silverton , Mario Batali, and Joseph Bastianich.

On Sundays they open at noon. There was already a line when we reached at 11:45. There were totally booked, but we managed to get seats at the pizza bar. It turned out to be better than getting a table. It was so much fun to see the pizza making action going on.

After eating pizza from here, I realized there are pizzas and then, there are pizzas. This one is the latter.

After Salumi and Eataly, this is our third experience with an establishment chef Mario Batali is involved with. The man’s a genius!! Enough said.

NYC ’11 – Day 3

Day 3 we decided to cover Rockefeller Center, Guggenheim Museum, Madison Ave and Central Park. While at Central Park, I wanted to shoot the iconic Apple store on 5th Ave. But on the way to Guggenheim I saw that the building was all covered up..it looked like there was some kind of maintenance going on….next time maybe. Did you know that the staircase in the Apple stores is one of the 313 patents that Steve Jobs owns?..Check out the complete list here.
Its when I got on top of the Rock did I realize that that climax of Matt Damon’s recent forgetful blunder – Adjustment Bureau was shot here.

GJELINA

GJELINA is this amazing place on Abbot Kinney Blvd, in Venice. A must-visit place in many ‘things to do in LA’ and ‘things to do in Abbot Kinney’ lists – we decided to check out this place last weekend. Giving us company was a colleague of mine and his family (another food loving family..:)). The place does not have a sign board outside, but you won’t miss the long wait lines outside. We got to sit in the patio, on a nice comfy couch.

The food is excellent. Not to be missed are the ‘lamb burger with harissa aioli, arugula and frites’ and the ‘warm strawberry & rhubarb crisp with almond gelato’. The other things we tried were the ‘burrata with grilled peach, prosciutto, arugula and balsamic’, ‘mixed mushroom and rosemary pizza’ and the ‘margherita pizza’. We fell in love with the place so much that, we went back for lunch the very next day (another reason was to get away from the three digit heat in the valley).
The place is extremely noisy, they have good service and amazing food. If you are taking kids, see if you can get a table outside in the back – it’s less noisy and less crowded.

Wurstküche Restaurant

If you are in LA Downtown’s Arts District, Wurstkuche is a good place to stop for sausages (alligator..), fries and excellent beer..
